Welcome to the Jameslab at the Garvan Institute in Sydney

Our lab is located in the Diabetes and Obesity program at Garvan, an affiliate of St Vincent's Hospital and the University of NSW.

Science

We use cell biology and systems biology approaches to understand how insulin works and how metabolic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity develop.

With the application of a range of model systems, spanning cells in culture to humans, we study changes in system behaviour during key transition states particularly those involving altered nutrition.

This has taken us into many corners of the cell:

  • autophagy
  • protein synthesis
  • glucose uptake
  • metabolism
  • mitochondrial function
  • oxidative stress

Understanding how the molecules that coordinate these processes fit together in time and space and how they are regulated both at the level of gene expression and post translationally defines our ambition.

To find out more about our research turn to the research channel. On other channels you will find information about core technologies, metabolic disease, data resources and lab members and collaborators are shown in the Credits.

We welcome applications from potential students and postdoctoral fellows who are interested in using experimental or computational approaches to study complex disease.
